In the middle of 2009, the architect and scenographer Ramón López Cauly approached to ARQ to design a monograph about his work in the last 40 years as a scenographer. Then ARQ contacted me for a design proposal.
The proposal was to divide the book in three parts. The first with the theoretical texts, the second as a work brochure and the third part as diferent articles about Ramón López Cauly including a chronology, a biography and bibliographical references about him and the editor of the book. So with Patricio Mardones, editor in chief of ARQ, we decided to divide this three chapters using diferent papers, the theoretical text in a matte paper, the works in couché paper and the third chapter in matte paper using one single ink.
The typographic choice was the Thesis Type family designed by Lucas de Groot, i think it’s legible, elegant and friendly exactly what the book’s personality needed.
The layout design was very simple based on the idea of enlarging the square format of the book (240 x 260mm) so when you read it you are not reading a square book you are reading a classic A5 book with oversized outer margins.
